Maybe this feels familiar...

You love flowers. You love colour. But somehow, every time you try to paint them, they end up feeling stiff or overworked.

You want something looser, more textured, more alive, but you're not quite sure how to get there.

This class shows you a different way in, one that starts with texture, builds with colour, and lets the flowers appear naturally from the layers.

No drawing required. Just play, layer, and enjoy.

Abstract flower painting in acrylics with Powerwax

Why this technique works so well

Texture first. Flowers second.

By building rich, textured layers first, you create a surface that already holds depth and interest before you even think about the flowers. That takes all the pressure off and makes the painting process feel playful rather than precious.

Whether you've never touched a palette knife or you've been painting for years, you are going to love this approach.

Less overthinking. More painting. More joy.

This is what we'll do together

One beautiful painting, built in three simple stages.

Stage 1 — building texture

Stage 1

Building the texture

We mix Powerwax (or Heavy Gel Medium) into the acrylics and build rich, textured base layers. This is the foundation — it doesn't look like much yet, but it's where the magic begins.

Stage 2 — adding colour

Stage 2

Layering colour

We add layers of beautiful colour, building depth and interest. Each layer responds to the one before — and the painting starts to come alive.

Stage 3 — painting the flowers

Stage 3

Painting the flowers

Using negative painting, we bring the flowers forward from the background. No drawing needed — the shapes emerge naturally from the layers you've already built.

What you'll take with you

More than a finished painting

By the end of this class, you'll have a beautiful textured flower painting,  but also something more valuable.

You'll understand how to build layers with texture medium, how to use negative painting to create shapes, and how to let a painting grow without forcing it.

These are techniques you can use again and again, for flowers, for abstracts, for anything you want to paint.

A finished painting, yes — but also a way of working you'll want to come back to.

Artist & Instructor

I'm Marina, a Dutch professional artist living in the South of France. I created this free lesson because painting with cold wax medium changed everything for me. And then I discovered I could do the same with acrylics and I love to share my findings with you. Whether you're a complete beginner or you've been painting for years, join me!
