“Powerwax gave me everything I loved about cold wax and oils — the textures, the layers, the surprises — but with the speed and ease of acrylics. Once you try it, you won’t want to stop!”
— Marina TvB
Student Work
I’ve now completed three of Marina’s classes on using Powerwax with acrylics, and each one has taken my painting to a new level. Her teaching style is clear, encouraging, and packed with practical techniques that are easy to apply but make a dramatic difference to the final artwork. Powerwax was completely new to me, but Marina breaks it down in such a way that I felt confident experimenting from day one. I now use it regularly to build depth, texture, and atmosphere in my work. Highly recommended for any artist looking to expand their mixed media skills in a meaningful and creative way. - Andrew B.-

Meet Your Instructor
Cold Wax Artist & Instructor
I’m Marina, a Dutch professional artist living in the South of France. I fell in love with Powerwax because it gives me everything I adore about cold wax painting — the textures, the layers, the happy accidents — but with the speed and ease of acrylics.
Whether you’re completely new to textured acrylic painting or an experienced painter looking for fresh techniques, I’ve designed this class to give you a solid foundation. I’ll show you everything I know, step by step, layer by layer!
“I love the soft look of cold wax and oils but I can 't stand the fumes of oil painting. So happy that I discovered this class with the Powerwax!.”
— Amy H.
“I really loved this class, there is so much content that it will keep me busy for months (if not years!).”
- Sammy L.
“I love the process of layering! I often paint in acrylics, mixing heavy body gel in my mix, but the Powerwax gives a completely different finish! Thank you, Marina!”
— ANNELOES P.
Powerwax is a water-based cold wax medium made by Powertex. Unlike traditional cold wax medium (like Gamblin), which is oil-based and only works with oil paints, Powerwax is designed specifically for acrylics. It gives you the same gorgeous textured, layered effects but dries much faster, cleans up with water, and is completely eco-friendly — no solvents needed. It’s the perfect alternative if you love the cold wax look but prefer working with acrylics.
Absolutely! This class is designed as a complete introduction to textured acrylic painting with Powerwax. I start from the very beginning — which tools to use, how to prepare your surface, how to mix Powerwax with acrylics, and every technique you need. Even if you’ve never touched water-based cold wax before, you’ll be creating beautiful textured paintings by Module 3.
Powerwax is made by Powertex and available through various retailers. I have a dedicated page on my website (marinatvb.com/powerwax-for-acrylics) with direct links to where you can buy Powerwax and all the recommended supplies. I cover everything in detail in Module 2 of the class.
This class is designed specifically for acrylics with Powerwax water-based cold wax. Powerwax is not compatible with oil paints. If you prefer working with oils, check out my Cold Wax Medium & Oils — The Basics class where I teach similar techniques using Gamblin cold wax medium with oil paints!
You’ll need Powerwax, acrylic paints, palette knives, a bowl scraper, a brayer, stencils, and rigid panels or cradled boards. Just like with traditional cold wax painting, we mostly work with tools rather than brushes! I give you a complete supply list with exact recommendations in Module 2 — Tools of the Trade.
Much faster! Since Powerwax is water-based, it dries significantly quicker than oil-based cold wax medium. Depending on the thickness of your layers, you can often continue working within hours rather than days. This makes it perfect for artists who love building up depth in acrylic painting without the long waiting times of oils.
No, they’re different products from the same brand. Powertex is a textile hardener used for sculptures and 3D art, while Powerwax is their water-based cold wax medium specifically designed for painting. In this class we use Powerwax for creating textured, layered acrylic paintings — not Powertex.
Not at all! While Powerwax is fantastic for abstract acrylic painting, it’s equally beautiful for figurative work, landscapes, florals, and portraits. In this class you’ll paint abstracts, a landscape, and florals — so you’ll see how versatile these mixed-media painting techniques truly are.
Powerwax has a very different consistency and finish compared to texture paste or acrylic gel medium. It creates a unique matte, waxy surface that you can scrape into, layer over, and build up in a way that’s not possible with other mediums. The techniques in this class are specifically designed for Powerwax, so I highly recommend using it for the best results.
Forever! Once you enroll, the lessons are yours for life. There’s no rush — work through the modules at your own pace, and come back whenever you need a refresher. Many students rewatch the technique demonstrations every time they start a new painting.
Stop wondering and start creating. Your first textured acrylic painting is waiting!
